Persian Dept has several accolades in its kitty

The accolades for the department which was established in the year 1918 by Maulana Syed Ashraf Shamsi to teach the classical language are many, including National Award and Presidential Awards.

Hyderabad: For the Persian Department at the Osmania University, it has been a long journey spanning over 99 years and several distinction in the field of Persian language and literature.

The accolades for the department which was established in the year 1918 by Maulana Syed Ashraf Shamsi to teach the classical language are many, including National Award and Presidential Awards.

Mohammed Ashfaque Chand, Head of the Persian Department, points out that over the decades, many a great scholars and poets in the field of Persian language have been associated with the department.

“They contributed a lot to the field of Persian language and literature. One of our faculty Professor Shareefunnissa Ansari was awarded Padma Sri for her contributions,” he said. Apart from this, four teachers also from the department received Presidential Awards in the field of Persian language.

The department library was also a rich repository of Persian books related to language and literature, he said and added that apart from this collection, the main library too had a wide and varied collection of unique books in Persian. “There are manuscripts in Persian language related to religion, philosophy, linguistics, history, literature, poetry and most of these were brought from Iran and Iraq,” said Professor Chand.

Apart from students and faculty, scholars too visit here for to study. Students graduating from the department have been landing jobs with MNCs as Persian language translators while many work as interpreters for visitors from other countries. At present, the department here has one of five teachers as academic consultants and other five as part-time teachers.
