Hyderabad: Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao said the government was focusing on strengthening and modernising canals with a special emphasis on Musi.

Towards this, the government has already sanctioned Rs 284.85 crore towards restoration of Buniyadigani, Pillaipalli and Dharma Reddy canals in Yadadri district.

Replying to a question by TRS MLA Vemula Veeresham on the moderinsation of these canals, the Minister said the past government had sanctioned funds, but the works were not taken up as per the schedule.

It was only after the TRS party came to power, the works were completed. The government was now strengthening and modernising the canals to ensure more water supply to tail-end farmers, the Minister said. Once the canals modernisation works are completed, additional ayacut of over 61,000 acres would be brought under cultivation, he informed.

Considering the land acquisition issues, Rao said of the Rs 284.85 crore, substantial amount was allocated for land acquisition. Giving details, The Minister said the technical sanction and tender-calling process was under way. The works will be completed within 18 months from the date of agreement as per terms and conditions. “I appeal to all the members to cooperate and support the Irrigation Department in completing the land acquisition early,” said Rao.
