Jagityal: With a view to create awareness among the public on construction of toilets, the district administration had pasted wall posters on health benefits of having toilets in all the houses in villages.

The posters explaining the evils of open defection and benefits with individual toilets along with pictures have been printed on behalf of the Collector and the Chairman of District Swatch Bharat Commission Management Committee.

Collector A Sharath had taken up the campaign on a massive scale to declare the district as open defection free (ODF) area by Republic Day on January 26, by constructing toilets in 32,000 houses, which do not have toilet facility. As a prelude, 820 toilets were constructed within a span of 36 hours in five selected villages.

On December 27, works began in all villages at 8.30 am and completed at same time next day morning. There are 200 units in Obulapur, 130 in Nadikuda of Mallapur mandal, 200 in Bhupathipur of Raikal mandal, 100 in Anthargoan of Jagityal and 190 in Vengalaipeta of Pegadapalli mandal.

According to sources, the district has 2,53,619 houses. Out of that 59,179 houses did not have toilet facilities before the formation of Jagityal district. About 28,000 units were completed after the creation of new district. While 22,000 units are under construction, 10,000 are at basement level.

To achieve the target, the Collector has been making serious efforts and organising awareness programmes in rural areas to educate people about the benefits of toilets.

District-level officers were deployed as mandal in-charges, mandal level officers to villages and village officers to wards. They are also taking the assistance of NGOs to educate the people.
