Gone are the days when we used to go to Archies or Walden to buy greeting cards or gifts for our loved ones. The new trend is all about giving them a personal touch. But not everybody is that artistic and creative. Worry not, for Palak Jain from The Scrap Shop is here to your rescue.

Palak says it all started as a hobby and even before she realised, it had turned into a small time venture. The then 19-year-old Palak, a student of Villa Marie Degree College, began making small handmade notes and greeting cards for her friends and relatives. 

“It started during my college days. I used to help my friends whenever they needed something,” she recalls. The entrepreneur mentions that her family encouraged her to take it up as a full-time profession. 

“My parents always told me that they saw great potential in this work of mine and that I should take it up more seriously,” she adds. The commerce graduate shares that the little handmade notes and greetings cards, over the time, have transformed into many other interesting things. 

“I now have things like the explosion boxes, 3D cards and other funky items that suit the tastes of the clientele,” she says.

When it started about four years ago, she had little clue that it would become such a successful venture. “I started it as a home-based store, but because of the growing demand, I opened a Facebook page,” says Palak. 

The artist says that she has learnt a lot in this journey and has nurtured her skills for the better. Palak mentions that the tastes of the customers have changed so much that they want to be in sync with the latest trends. 

Be it a baby shower or wedding invitation, or any customised gift, people are asking for themes like angry birds or some cartoon characters, says Palak. 

“They want the gifts or cards to be as funky as possible,” she says. Starting at Rs 50, the price depends on the customer’s budget. But, says Palak, “most people are willing to spend well here.”
