Gandhinagar: Amazon India on Wednesday inked a pact with Gujarat Tribal Development Department to train and enable tribal entrepreneurs to directly sell their products to the former’s platform.
The product portfolio that will be listed include products like bamboo crafts, Warli painting, Pithora painting, Bhada painting, clay craft, minor forest produces (like honey, musli and tamarind), herbal medicines, embroidery items and tribal food items.
“As part of the MoU, Amazon India will educate, train and enable tribal entrepreneurs to directly sell their products to Amazon customers not only in India but across the globe,” the online firm said.
The agreement was inked at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2017.
“The association intends to empower and generate livelihood opportunities and income for the tribal artisans and boost the tribal community economy. It is also in accordance with Prime Minister’s Stand Up India vision,” says Amazon India Director and GM (Seller Services) Gopal Pillai.
With the option of selling products online, tribal artisans will be able to fetch an appropriate price for their unique products, which in-turn will help raise their overall standard of living, he added.
Amazon India will also engage with tribal artisans across Gujarat to train — especially women entrepreneurs — on making the products more attractive, appealing and marketable across the online domain.
Furthermore, Amazon India shall provide technical guidance and hand-holding to tribal artisans with aspects related to identifying saleable products, grading, standardisation, certification and other promotional activities as well.
Amazon.in, which has over 1.5 lakh sellers listed on its platform, has partnerships with various Government bodies like DC Handloom, Ministry of Textiles and National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD) to supplement efforts of the Government in uplifting artisans and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the country.
